Durability+Design journal, in article "Wood Restoration" by Allen - TopicsExpress

Durability+Design journal, in article "Wood Restoration" by Allen Zielnik provided a very nice breakdown of Causes of Damage (to wood): Weather and Moisture, Wood Rot and Insects. Water and Moisture getting into wood leads to fungi in the wood which produces digestive enzymes which destroys the wood. Wood rot is caused by fungi or bacteria creating paths through the wood; three major groups are Brown rot (brown when wood dries, also called dry rot), White rot (white, gray-white, yellow-white or bleached appearance; infect hardwoods; has a stringy texture; lacks checking of brown rot) and Soft rot (significant strength loss of wood; looks like orange pancake batter). Insects include Powerpost Beetles, Carpenter Ants, and Subterranean Termites.
