During Biblical times Shepherds would be seen anointing their sheep. Some theologians have said that the original purpose of the anointing came from the practice of the shepherds anointing there sheep. They would be seen anointing there sheep to prevent lice and other insects from getting into the wool of the sheep, they would anoint the sheeps head with oil. They would do this to prevent insects from burrowing into the sheeps ears because it could eventually kill the sheep. Lice and other insect infested sheep will cause the sheep to bite at themselves and begin rubbing against anything available. If they were allowed to do this, this act would damage the fleece by matting the fibres and tearing the tip of the staple. If the sheep were not protected from the lice and other insects it would directly decrease the economic value of the sheep. So, the shepherds would pour oil on the sheeps head. This made the wool slippery, making it impossible for insects to get near the sheeps ears because the oil would cause them to just slide off. The anointing became symbolic of healing, blessing, protection, and empowerment. As believers we also are as sheep and need the anointing to protect our ear-gate which is our thought life to protect our ears from receiving any negative messages from our past as well as our present and future. We need the anointing of God to cause those things that would want to attach itself to us to just slide off, because of the anointing. Its wonderful to know that we have been anointed. And the power of the anointing is enough power that will drown every negative word, break and destroy every yoke, circumstance or situation that would attempt to discourage us. Let us give God thanks for anointing our head to protect the value that He placed on the inside of us....just my thoughts. Dr Nicole Walker.
