During National Nurses Week, May 6 to 12, 2014, we wish to acknowledge nursing staff who have dedicated themselves to long term care. Sometimes, nursing staff who have not worked in LTC have the impression that LTC nursing is dull, easy, and less demanding than other specialties. Anyone who has worked in LTC knows that is hardly the case. LTC nursing staff care for residents of various ages and with a wide range of conditions. On a single unit there can be residents recovering from a hip replacement, receiving dialysis, managing cardiac disease, experiencing depression, and requiring protection from risks associated with their dementia. The range of treatments and medications is significant. And then, there is the issue of needing to provide holistic care as for many residents, the facility has become their home. There is nothing dull and easy about this! And to think, LTC nursing staff do all of this with a fraction of the staff that their colleagues in hospitals enjoy. For meeting these complex demands and honoring the unique human beings that you serve, thank you.
