During a discussion with some college students, I was asked what my definition of blasphemy against the Holy Spirit was. The question came from a discussion of Matthew 12:31-32 (NIV), where Jesus was addressing the Pharisees: And so I tell you, every kind of sin and slander can be forgiven, but blasphemy against the Spirit will not be forgiven. Anyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven, but anyone who speaks against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven, either in this age or in the age to come. Blasphemy is showing or speaking a strong irreverence toward God. It could be cursing God or degrading things relating to God. It could be accusing someone who is considered by many as spirit filled to be satan filled. The motive of your heart is known by God. Once again let us look at how the Pharisees attacked Jesus. Mark 3:22 (NIV); And the teachers of the law who came down from Jerusalem said, He is possessed by Beelzebul! By the prince of demons He is driving out demons. These religious leaders were threatened by Jesus influence on the people; they were envious and jealous of Him. Jesus went on to say in verses 29&30: Whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit will never be forgiven; they are guilty of an eternal sin. He said this because they were saying, He has an impure spirit. Isnt this very similar to how some are envious or jealous of a Christians position, so they attempt to tear that person down through rumors? Isnt this similar to how one Pastor may criticize the work of another Pastor who may have a larger congregation or nicer church building? The one being attacked may be called by the Holy Spirit, so isnt this a form of blasphemy against the Holy Spirit? A total rejection of Jesus is blasphemy of the Holy Spirit. A person who dies in unbelief would then be guilty of blasphemy and there would be no pardon for that person. A person who is continually rejecting the Holy Spirit’s promptings to trust in and follow Jesus, is guilty of the unpardonable blasphemy against Him. There is a lot to be considered and understood here. It would be fair to say, we should be cautious whenever we reject a command or teaching of Jesus or when we degrade someone working for God.
