During a recent trip to Santa Fe, I rode with a terrific horsemanship teacher and clinician (Ginger Gaffney). She introduced me to some fascinating work she is doing with at-risk folks at the Delancey Street Foundation. Their facility had a horsemanship program long ago -- and Ginger is helping them revive it. Several horses had been running semi-wild on the property. But once Ginger arrived on the scene, she taught the Delancey Street folks to work with the horses. I was very impressed with the courage and calmness of the people there. In spite of their many challenges in life (or maybe because of them), they were able to slow down and help some pretty troubled horses with careful coaching from Ginger. Made me wonder if LOPE should develop a program for working with troubled youth or at-risk inmates. What do you all think? delanceystreetfoundation.org/facnm.php
