During his historical speech without any bullot proof protection glass from the ramparts of Red Fort on August 15, 2014, our Hon Prime Minister Shri. Narendra Modi wished and announced Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana through which bank accounts will be opened for 15 crore poor persons with an overdraft facility of Rs 5,000 and accidental insurance cover of Rs. 1 lakh... The scheme, to be pushed by the government in a mission mode, seeks to provide two accounts to 7.5 crore identified households by August 2018... He observed that people have mobile phones but not bank accounts and he hoped that the scheme will help in bringing the benefits of formal banking system to them... It was only a news item to me till yesterday... However, today when I took the privilege to accompany my banking colleagues who knocked the doors of the under privileged lot of the society in Chennai with the account opening forms, I felt the real meaning and essence of financial inclusion in letter and spirits... The responses were amazing... Inspite of having a daily income of almost Rs. 1000, they said they have considerable amount of fear in entering to a bank and meet the officials over there... Ward of another man secured 1085 marks in plus two... He was looking forward for some educational loan in the near future... Two men were very keen in getting an account for their spouses and was telling that those women has got money in their safe custody at home... Few could not believe the fact that bankers are at their door step... We could also observe range of emotions on their faces when they were signing the forms... Had thoroughly enjoyed the trip in meeting the Indians who were far away from the Online mode of the present era... When they get their passbooks and debit cards within a day or two, can visualise the happiness on their faces... They must be indebted to such historical initiatives of the state... Constructively let us hope that, such inclusion at large is going to give India a renewed vigour... Let them smile more...
