During his visit to ACN International, Father Rifat Bader, a Catholic priest working in Jordan, a country that has become a haven from refugees from Iraq and Syria, expressed his hope that Christians may remain in the Middle East. Father Bader does media and PR work for the Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem. He has built a media centre in Amman and developed the Arab- and English-language website abouna.org through ACN’s financial support. Both projects should help “promote a dialogue, especially among Christians and Muslims,” he emphasised. Father Bader explained the help that these refugees are receiving in Jordan and pointed out to the need of more centres to accommodate the increasing number of refugees. ACN supports various aid programmes for refugee families and children as well as youth work and youth pastoral care. Father Rifat Bader also spoke of the challenges that the Jordanian youth face. He warned of the danger that extremists pose and their use of the lack of work prospects and the social problems within the country for propaganda purposes: “We must not leave them a clear field. This is why young people should be allowed to have their say. We want to bring Muslims and Christians of various denominations together, open doors and look for solutions. We want to take to the streets and go to the peripheries, as Pope Francis said.”
