During my diving in Marsa Alam I saw at least four divers holding onto or putting parts of their equipment onto coral in blatant breach of the rules. When I mentioned this the guides said they were aware of such abuses but did not feel able to challenge or sanction the perpetrators. The dive centres in effect also have to turn a blind eye, because times are hard and money is money. My only proposal is that fellow divers should take action to stop such behaviour when they see it, as I now do, and should make clear afterwards that it is not acceptable. Anyone who claims they touched the coral by accident should go back for basic training in buoyancy, trim and awareness of their environment.
