During my first year in Japan, I lived halfway between Kyoto and Osaka. Japanese people would call that area "countryside" but I would call it "the suburbs." There were more trees and bushes, but otherwise not much nature to enjoy or escape into. I could see mountains not too far away, but yet too far to reach. Finding a place to relax and just be at peace was difficult, and I found myself often feeling trapped without a place to rest. A year and a half later I returned to Japan, this time to live. I moved deep into Osaka city, and oddly enough I had no more feelings of being confined. As I prayed and walked in the slum part of the city, somehow even that was beautiful to me (maybe it was the people I was looking at). Now I am drawn to some mountains I have never known, but which are buried deep inside of me. Yet walking in the polluted concrete jungle today I can still see beauty and be moved. Wherever the Creator calls you, His presence will give you rest.
