During my generations grade and high school years, we were required to take and pass tests on the state and federal constiutions. American History was a required course in high school, again take and pass constitutions tests. Same was required during my childrens tenure in grade and high school. How can any student, regardless of age, regardless of state, sit through elementary and high school without learning at least something about their countrys history? It was drilled into us, as something important for us to know. Did I like studying for it? No! Did I have a choice? No! Do I wish I had taken it more seriously? YES! I wish there were a way for history teachers to make the subject live for their students. There are so many videos/documentaries/etc available now that surely something from them could be retained by young people. Unfortunately, too many out there regard the founding fathers of The United States as old white men who knew nothing of any value. What that generation of Americans did, and just about every generation since, even with all their flaws, was set the stage, then bleed and die that todays younjg people could concentrate on which Hollywood/television star is sleeping with the next one. I am so proud of those who are working hard, going to college to actually acquire an education, with dreams and goals in mind, learning how to discern the difference between political power grabs and genuine concern for a nations well begin.
