During my research work last year, I had filed numerous applications under the RTI Act asking for information on the number of Bangladeshis in the various correctional homes in Bengal, serving their sentence after having been convicted of being illegal foreigners and also asking the Bengal, Assam and Central Governments about the number of persons who have been sent back across the border, into Bangladesh from the year 2000. While the Bengal Government was very forthcoming to inform me about the number of illegal foreigners in prisons, none of the three governments (I got the last pending reply from the Bengal Govt. today) informed me about the number of persons that they may have had sent back across the border, stating that such information relates to the respective Intelligence Branches and hence cannot be published for public view. One wonders what problem they might have in informing the public about the number of foreigners they have allegedly pushed back into Bangladesh/ other countries?? It aint after all, that I asked them as to how many of them they have allowed to enter in lieu of some valuable paper/ how may of them have they granted ration cards to, etc. in order to increase ones vote bank.
