During my second year at college, I acquired a rider to keep me company on the 1.5 hour trip back to school. I always stretched my stay at home and left in the wee hours of Monday morning, just in time to get back to class. The road to pick up my rider was a rural town road. One cold, winter morning, I was creeping along in the dark with my windows still half covered with frost. I was almost at her house when I rolled over one of those RR crossings that is only marked with an X (no arms or lights). My car had just cleared the tracks went I felt the unmistakable WHOOSH and shock wave of a train roaring past the trunk of my car! Compounding my poor visibility was a huge hedge of bushes obscuring the tracks! My knees turned to jelly and I could hardly drive the 1/2 mile or so to pick up my classmate. My Mom ALWAYS got up at 5 AM to see me off ~ and I never pulled away from home without watching her bless me from the kitchen window and begin her prayers for my safe arrival. I dont know if I ever told her ... Thank-you, Mom. Your faithfulness saved my life more than once, Im sure.
