During several conversations today with different people, I - TopicsExpress

During several conversations today with different people, I noticed something. We listen to international news (often with a political slant to it - left or right) and we tend to disassociate ourselves from it. Because it seems so far away - or unrelated to our lives. Whats more important? Putin getting control of Crimea? Or getting to your next meeting on time? I get frustrated when I ask somebody a question regarding recent news and they look at me blankly and say oh... I havent been following that...doesnt really affect me. HUH? So I just wanted to do a little experiment. Perhaps to reassure myself that all this history in the making does really mean something to me. And you can try this too: Instead of using Google Earth to check out your old neighborhood, or what your home looks like from above (which I admit is fun), go fly at street level through the Ukraine...and into the Crimea peninsula. Really pay attention. Zoom in to street level. Its no different than here: Farmlands, small towns, big towns, cities, forests, factories, etc. And youll see cars parked on the street, familiar looking buildings, train tracks, landmarks, even potholes. Heck, if I took a screenshot and posted it on Facebook and asked you were it was, you might say upstate NY. Or Ohio. And the same applies to every other country struggling right now with some sort of major issue. They really all look just like home. The people might look a bit different - but that applies to each individual neighborhood in NYC as well. My point is nothing more than just Pay attention to the news. Even if its on the other side of the globe. Because if it can happen there, it can happen here. Dont kid yourself into thinking were untouchable. Or that our situation cant change rapidly. (It actually is - but most folks arent paying attention). Understanding other countries struggles and how they came to be can help us here at home recognize the signs of potential trouble and ultimately help us make better decisions. Now seriously, go use Google to fly around the streets of Crimea....
