During the Battle of Verdun from February 21st until October 1916, 13 area villages like this one were caught in the battles and obliterated, never to be resurrected (signposted as Villages Detruites). The village of Fleury changed hands between the French and the Germans 16 times during the eight months of the Battle of Verdun. Though gone, the 13 destroyed villages in this area have not been forgotten: nine still have mayors and city councils. I thought there would still be a few buildings here and there, but they werent kidding when they said this village was destroyed. There was absolutely nothing left there.
