During the Civil War tragedy hit the home front swiftly and without mercy. On this day in 1862, Samuel Kehr of Vandalia, Illinois enlisted in Company I of the 97th Illinois Infantry. Fifty days later he died of disease in Lexington, Kentucky. He never reached the front, and never saw the enemy.
