During the first 10 minutes or so of watching The Great Gatsby, I was annoyed. Everything was moving along too fast, in colorful flashes of light. The characters were a bunch of rich dicks putting on airs. Then I got into the groove of the movie. The plot began to reveal itself, and I was all aboard and enjoying the ride. Perhaps if I had a better memory, I would have known the plot, having read the book in high school. I recalled all sorts of details - the gas station, the eyes of Dr. Eckleburg, the conflict between Nouveau riche and old money, big parties and a troubled Mr. Gatsby. But the plot? Entirely MIA in my head, until last night. One of the controversial aspects of the movie was the soundtrack. Its a mix of early 1920s music and modern Jay-Z and Kayne West rap crap. I loved it. Kayne will be rapping about money, chicks and living the high life, and then the song will morph into Rhapsody in Blue. It worked for me. Guys like Jay-Z and West perform songs celebrating decadent lifestyles, which is what Gatsby is all about -- excess. It wasnt a great movie, but it was worthwhile.
