During the first World War, the British and German navies were two of the best in the world with some of the largest ships in service, particularly the Dreadnaught class of warship. While both sides envisioned a massive clash of enormous fleets on the high seas, their dreams were never realized; both sides ordered their fleets to avoid engaging one another, as the ships they were using were unbelievable expensive, and thus, a heavy loss to the nation if any went down. While smaller engagements certainly happened, there was never the grande battle that the two had dreamed of before the war ended!
