During the jumu’ah khutbah when the khateeb is making du’aa do the people in the masjid say ameen.. Q. During the jumu’ah khutbah when the khateeb is making du’aa do the people in the masjid say aameen, knowing that during the khutbah it is not permissible to speak. What is the ruling with regards to this? A.The shaykh (hafidhahullaah) said: firstly, it’s not permissible for anyone attending the khutbah to speak during the khutbah. During the khutbah no one can speak. However, the imam giving the khutbah, he is allowed to speak to the people who are sitting in the congregation. If he needs to tell someone to do something, that is permissible. We know this because the Prophet (Sallaahu alayhi wa sallam) did this. Once a man entered during the khutbah and he sat down and the Prophet (sallaahu alayhi wa sallam) said to him; ‘Hey, did you pray 2 rakaah’s? Stand up and pray 2 rakaah’s ‘. So we know it’s permissible for the imam to speak to the people in the congregation. However, the people attending the prayer are not allowed to speak. When it comes to saying aameen, when the khateeb is making du’aa and the people might want to say aameen so the du’aa is answered the shaykh (hafidhahullaah) said, that I hope that there is no sin in them doing this as long as the people do not raise their voices and disturb others. So, we can say aameen but in a low voice. Shaykh Saalih Muhammad al-Luhaydaan (May Allaah preserve him) (Kitaab-ut-Tawheed Class, Q&A Session 08-08-2012, Riyadh)
