During the lean standup comedy years, I was without health insurance for many years. When I was finally able to get it, they did an intake and discovered that I had been treated for depression for many years. They said, Depression is a pre-existing condition, so we wont cover it. I said, Well, THATS depressing... Ive also made no secret of my battle with addiction. July 22, I celebrated 23 years, clean and sober. So, when I heard the news about Robin Williams, I had a whirlwind of emotions. Sadness, of course, but also a recognition of the kind of pain that makes one consider the most permanent of solutions, having been on the brink myself. Robin Williams was brilliant on so many levels. It is absolutely appropriate that we celebrate his body of work and the gifts he gave to the world. But, lets learn from this tragedy. We are all so public with our physical illnesses; we post them on Facebook, get on prayer chains, etc. Lets remove the stigma of mental illness so that more people will seek the help they need. RIP Robin Williams. May you find the peace that eluded you on this plane of existence and THANK YOU for all you gave the world. Youll be missed.
