During the next 24 hour period I will be thinking about the artificiality of January 1st. After all it is a passage of time that is unremarkable in and of itself. The earth will turn on its axis and the sun will “rise” and “set”. In celestial terms this “day” is just another; if you want meaningful days you might consider the equinoxes or sacred days when a flood or rain produces a harvest of natural plants that we consume. And yet this day produces in many of us a compulsion to “improve” and set “goals.” But if you consider the ordinariness and emptiness of this day you might instead meditate on “who” it is that needs to achieve these results – whose resolutions are they? If instead of judging your “self” you simply notice your thoughts and actions you will probably find that the voices of your parents, friends, and the media are setting these standards and have been doing so for a long time. So who is this “you” that needs to get thinner, richer, or more popular? I suggest you get to know this “nonperson” intimately and begin to love him or her. Allow him or her to finally relax and align with the moon and the stars, to breathe deeply from the abdomen and simply let go of the many voices that have been running “your life.” If you still need to jump out of an airplane, bungee jump or meet the President, then by all means quietly and deeply do those things. But do them for the entity (if you find one) that remains after you do this inquiry. Celebrate, make noise, dance, kiss a stranger and drink champagne and go into a crowd of 100,000 screaming people if “you” want to. But first try to ascertain where this “want” arises, and who is feeling it. You might actually discover another level of peace and from this space the next 365 “days” may unfold in ways “you” never imagined. youtu.be/0URQgqtHAkM
