During the summer of 2011, three satellite tags were deployed on post-nesting green turtles in Saipan, Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands (CNMI). Goals of this effort were to integrate sea turtles in educational activities, acquire greater understanding of their biology and ecology, and promote greater community awareness of conservation needs and migrations. Kumiko, tagged at Bird Island Marine Sanctuary has migrated to the Philippines, where her tag stopped transmitting in Tagun Bay, Philippines. This particular turtle was named in memorial to a volunteer of the CNMI STP who passed away after a fight with cancer on the same evening this turtle emerged to nest. Philippine colleagues have been notified that Kumiko is in their waters and are encouraged to share this information widely. The second turtle, Magas (which translates to “boss” in the Chamorro language), was tagged at LaoLao Bay and named by Rota High School students. Magas’ transmitter stopped transmitting on August 19, 2011 near the island of Miyakojima, Japan. She traveled the longest distance of the three turtles satellite tagged; a total of 2,441 km! At Tank beach of Forbidden Island Sanctuary, students of Kagman High School Marine Biology Club observed and participated during the satellite tag application of the third turtle they named Limwamway, or “beautiful” in the Carolinian language. Her last satellite transmission placed her in the Philippine Sea just west of Saipan. Although her track ended abruptly, we did learn that she laid an unexpected total of nine nests! A Shared International Resource @@@@ By all means. Please lets protect our nesting turtles as those are the real turtles that we can claim as our. Every poached nesting turtle in your island mean your reducing your real turtles that will repopulate your stocks. Olowee, ........ Ghatilyong.
