During this week of Thanksgiving, we are reminded once again of the bounty of our nation, and our great fortune to live in a country governed by the consent of the people and founded on the ideals of opportunity and seizing possibilities for a brighter future. Elections are a manifestation of those aspirations. Each one represents a collective expression of the nation’s hopes and concerns. And this year’s mid-term elections were indisputably a mandate for change and a repudiation of the status quo of hyper-partisanship and gridlock. The question is, will the public’s cry for results over ideological recalcitrance be translated into action in Washington. Following the elections, incoming Senate majority leader Mitch McConnell stated that Republicans are “here to make the place function again.” His statement reflects an understanding an appreciation of the problem, and the frustration of the American people. Now, it will be up to us as Americans to ensure that Republicans and Democrats alike will pursue appropriate, effective solutions to make Congress work.
