During yesterdays lecture, Shaykh Yaqoubi quoted an Islamic figure referring to this figure as the Shaykh ul Islam of Damascus from 7th century Hijrah. I find it odd that, for some peculiar reason, Yaqoubi continuously referenced this scholar but did not once provide the name of this Shaykh ul Islam. And there is literally only one figure I know of who accurately fits this description. Now, considering that this unnamed figure has been made into a character of controversy in the modern era, I can see why it would be unwise to mention his name explicitly in such a gathering. Though I must say Im saddened that Islamic discourse in traditional circles has been diluted to such an extent that openly discussing basic issues of theology [or even naming certain figures] has become problematic. What led to this? Or maybe he was referring to another Shaykh ul Islam?
