Dust of the ground. The language used here is metaphorical. Adam - TopicsExpress

Dust of the ground. The language used here is metaphorical. Adam was not literally made of dust. As President Brigham Young remarked, When you tell me that father Adam was made . . . from the earth, you tell me what I deem an idle tale. The idea that Adam was fashioned the same as we make adobes is a baby story and if he had been made in such a manner he would be nothing but a brick in the resurrection. He was made . . . as you and I are made, and no person was ever made upon any other principle.] Although Adam’s physical body was created only after this earth had been organized, his spirit had been in existence in an organized capacity for millions, if not billions, of years prior to the creation. Indeed, even the matter from which Adam’s body was made existed prior to his being physically organized. Matter or element is self-existent and eternal in nature, creation being merely the organization and reorganization of that substance which ‘was not created or made, neither indeed can be’ (Doctrine and Covenants 93: 29). In an official statement from the First Presidency and Council of the Twelve, we read: The Creator is an Organizer. God created the earth as an organized sphere; but He certainly did not create, in the sense of bringing into primal existence, the ultimate elements of the materials of which the earth consists, for ‘the elements are eternal’ (Doctrine and Covenants 93: 33). So also life is eternal, and not created; but life, or the vital force, may be infused into organized matter. From _The Truth About Eden: Understanding the Fall and our Temple Experience_
