Dutch Reform Plans for Social Services Discussed In The House — The VVD-PvdA coalition (Conservatives-Labour) wants yet more austerity, with requisition of unpaid work as “compensation” for public entitlements. The rigorous laws should come into effect by Summer next year. Ruud Kuin of Trade Union FNV stated that the proposed compensation with unpaid work will lead to crowding out on the labor market: “People will be pitted against each other. He added that claimants are forced to work for nought at the expense of others who have the right to paid by employers be paid and that such a move “would be a violation of the prohibition on forced labor.“ Jacques Peeters (Bijstandsbond): ”A frontal assault on beneficiaries has been deployed. The bill exudes sheer suspicion of claimants and makes them many times worse than bankers.” This got a big applause from the audience. Strong criticism was also elicited by Cabinet’s intention to strip beneficiaries of all income for 3 months when they ‘misbehave’ —to be determined by municipal or UWV staff— or when ‘not correctly dressed’ at application interviews. It is feared that hose who have to overcome such periods without any income will sink deeper into debt and poverty. There are, of course, more detrimental ways to respond to these and other assaults by State and public.
