Dwarka amongst the 12 heritage cities to be developed under Centrally funded HRIDAY scheme Union Minister for Urban Development gives Rs 22 crore to develop Dwarka as heritage site Press Release ******* Government of Gujarat, Office of the Resident Commissioner, Gujarat Information Centre, New Delhi, 21st january 2015: The Temple city of Dwarka has been selected as one of the 12 cities by the Union Ministry for Urban Development to be developed as a heritage site under the Heritage City Development and Augmentation Yojana (HRIDAY) scheme launched by Union Minister for Urban Development Shri M. Venkaiah Naidu here today. During the launch of the HRIDAY scheme, Shri Naidu handed over a sanction letter of Rs 22 crore to Member of Parliament, Jamnagar Smt Poonamben Madam and Shri Anupam Anand, Additional Chief Executive Officer, Gujarat Urban Development Mission. Dwarka is one of the foremost four sacred Hindu pilgrimage sites (Chardham) and finds mention in Mahabharata and Skanda Purana. The place is renowned for the Dwarkadheesh temple, among other notable historical and religious sites. Shri Anupam Anand said that the Government of Gujarat will prepare a comprehensive plan to achieve the heritage development target from the allotted Central funding and efforts have already been put in place by the State Government to provide best facilities for tourists and pilgrims in Dwarka city. Union Minister for Urban Development Shri M. Venkaiah Naidu said that no nation can move forward ignoring its cultural heritage and legacy. The HRIDAY scheme will revive the soul and rejuvenate the selected heritage cities. He also urged the States to involve NGOs, private sector and spiritual experts to chalk out a comprehensive plan for documentation of their rich cultural heritage.
