Dwight Yoakam was born on this day in 1956. Dwight is a real rockin’ country singer who has also had his hand in acting and film directing. He is a phenomenal recording artist and has sold over 25 million records, with 5 US number 1’s, 12 Gold Albums, and 9 Platinum Albums. As an actor you will have seen him in Sling Blade, Red Rock West and South of Heaven, West of Hell which he wrote and directed. For a taste of Dwight’s music go no further than “Just Looking For A Hit”. Im not that much of a Country & Western fan but this guy helps give an appreciation to a genre I don’t have a lot of in my collection of CD’s, but amongst the few by Hank, Waylon, Willie, Flat & Scruggs, for me he is by far “The Man”. He has a unique inflection to match his unique voice and this early period “best of” album has no duds. The opening track “Long White Cadillac” has all that is country twang and is a purely sensational! Yee-haa & giddy-up along with the honky-tonkin Honky Tonk Man or the rockabilly Elvis fave Little Sister or get ya toes a-tapping to the duet with Buck Owens on Streets Of Bakersfield. You can then cruise smoothly in “Guitars, Cadillacs” and “Little Ways”. We have a mood changer with the tearjerker I Sang Dixie and no matter if your rekid collection consists of many varied artists or is Dwight only, this album definitely has so many songs that stand out as C & W favourites you’d play it over and over.
