Dylan wrote and performed this song 50 years ago next month. In other words, two generations ago. You might find some of the themes in the lyrics here reminiscent of whats going on today. It doesnt mean Dylan was prescient. It just means some aging counter culture hippie types are out there today trying to recapture the spirit embodied in these lyrics, but if you notice, there is no equivalent today of Bob Dylan. Now will there be because the cause of these anti-police protests is based on a lie. Dylan was not a leader of the anti-war or civil rights movement. He was idealized as such by many in those movements, but when asked about it, Dylan said, Im not leading anything. Im a singer. People too young today to remember those days and many old enough to remember them tend to over-romanticize them to such a degree, they impose those desires on issues and incidents undeserving. Eric Garner died accidentally and wrongfully at the hands of the police, but not criminally. In the last hour of his life, Michael Brown committed at least three felonies, including attempted murder of a police officer and died in a justified shooting by police. There are some issues fully deserving of our moral and righteous indignation. But we cannot conflate or inflate any incident to make it so. That would be dishonest and a betrayal of the principles protesters purport to defend. Yet, assuming it is principle upon which they stand seems doubtful. I believe the core of the protesters stand for nothing more than social disintegration. vimeo/72540087
