EAA museum camping trip We loaded up the trusty S10 for a week of camping. I always take the first two weeks of August off because of my birthday. I haven’t worked on my birthday for over 30 years a record I am proud of. We came up with a cool way to pack the truck. We use the car top carrier (the one I used to move out of Florida. They wanted $50 to rent one and I could buy one for $60.). We tie it down in the center of bed of the trusty S10 so we had dry storage and still had room for the rest of the stuff. It would normally take about an hour and a half to reach the EAA but it took us a lot longer because I like to take all the back roads. It was a lot of fun till Chris learned how to read a map. He was always worried about us getting lost. Now it’s the train track coming up dad. The town is one more mile dad. He spoiled all my fun. Our first stop was the EAA museum and we went right to the EEA camp ground. What a nice place all the camp sites were clean and in the shade. They had fire wood piled up next to each camp site. When we asked how much and they said free. I said I will take one and they said they would need to see my EEA membership card. I asked how much if I didn’t have a card. They said $45. I said I can get a hotel room for that amount. They recommended we try shady acres just down the road. We passed the place 2 times before we saw that a shady acre is a field with 5 trees and a corn field. We could see in the field the remains other campers that set up their camp in their assigned area. It did not look good but we were out of time. We hit the place at the best time. The EEA fly in just ended in a mighty rain storm and everyone went home. They only use the fields for the over flow of campers and the good sites are on top of the hill. Just take the dirt road thru the corn field and up the hill. We had the place to ourselves except for the guy that lived there year round. What a nice site. They had trails going all over the woods and a bathroom and shower close by. The first thing we did was set up camp. We have done this before and in no time the camp was ready. The next thing is fire wood. I knew the woods were picked clean by the EEA fly in campers so I sent the kid out to scout the woods and bring back anything he can find. Dad has to rest now it is Miller time. About 20 min. go by and I see the bushes start moving and sounds of grunting. A short time later the kid comes out of the woods and says he needs help with the fire wood. I said its miller time now I will get it later. When I went in the woods expecting a tree trunk but instead I see a bundle of fire wood just like bundles they sell in the store. Right next to a nice dead tree that I think I can easily snap into pieces. I was wrong. Our first attempt didn’t go as planned but Chris liked it. The plan was to have me jump on one end of the tree lying over a log and use Chris as a counter weight on the other end. I saw the bottom of Chris’s feet. He wanted me to try again. But the second attempt went bad and Chris was launched off to the side and it didn’t look good. Oh to be young again. He wanted to go again but Dad has to rest it is Miller time. We were finally able to snap in half between two trees and burned the ends. The next day we went to the museum and had a good time. Chris would always run ahead of me because he would stop read what it is and off to the next one. I would read the story behind it. He would come back to me in a few minutes and say dad you have to see this. I said I will be there soon. By the time I got there he has seen most of the museum and wants to know what’s next? After I saw everything I wanted to see we went out to the pioneer airport. It is a collection of old hangers and workshops. Filled with old planes of every type you can think of. Some them you would never think of. Makes you wonder how they fly and who in their right mind would fly it. We went in to the hanger where they sell airplane rides. I saw the prices and tried to hurry the kid to the next hanger. I was too late some hot looking chick was asking if Chris would like to ride in an airplane. I told her we are not interested. I went on to a display of old tools when Chris comes to me and says he wants to fly in the plane. I told him that if you do that we will have to go home soon because I don’t have the money. He said it’s free. I said you can go after I check with the hot chick to see what the deal is. The EAA wanted to fly one million kids at no cost to the kid. The pilot walked Chris around the plane pointing out what controls the plane. He pointed to one and Chris said oh that would make the plane go that way and that one over there will make it go that way and that one over there. The pilot was impressed and let Chris fly the plane. Chris was into matchbox cars and he had a good collection. We bought some matchbox planes at the museum so Chris needed an airport. He built one complete with a whole town. He had a firehouse, stores and of course a police station. I watched him play with his planes and came up with an idea. I took a stick and cut a slot in the end of it and the tail of the plane fit in nice and tight. He played with the stick and airplane for hours. We tried formation flying with a stick that had 3 branches and it worked great but the 4 branch one didn’t work to good and the 5 branch needed a big stick. That night tragedy struck the town. Some drunk destroyed the town. He didn’t seem to like the police station at all. I tried to track him but he was a tricky one. He made it look like someone came out of the tent and did it. I tracked him to the woods where he took a piss and after a few missteps he kills a small tree. Then he made it look like he went back to the tent. I lost him after that because there are too many footprints to track. The next stop was the train museum.
