EAJA EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE MEETING IN BUJUMBURA REINSTATES ITS SECRETARY GENERAL NOVEMBER 10, 2014 The Executive Committee of Eastern Africa Journalists Association (EAJA) successfully held its meeting in Bujumbura, Burundi, on 8 November 2014 and reinstated Omar Faruk Osman as its elected Secretary General. After discussing a wide range of issues raised at its last meeting in January 2014 in Addis Ababa, the Executive Committee agreed by a large majority (5 votes for and 1 against) that Omar Faruk Osman be asked to resume to his post as Secretary General. In January 2014, the Executive Committee met in Addis Ababa and took the decision to suspend Omar Faruk Osman as EAJA Secretary General and appoint first vice-president Alexandre Niyungeko as Acting Secretary General. This decision was taken under extraordinary circumstances where the Secretary General was not allowed into Ethiopia and the Executive Committee could not hear his views and did not give him a right to reply to allegations raised by some members. Concern was then raised that the suspension decision didn’t comply with statutory provisions of EAJA constitution. EAJA President Dr. Muheldin Ahmed Idris announced to EAJA members as well as IFJ and FAJ leaders attending the regional workshop on working conditions, that Omar Faruk Osman has resumed his duties as Secretary General with effect from November 9, 2014. “Having given him the opportunity to explain himself on a number of issues, I can confirm that the suspension had been lifted from Omar Faruk Osman and he has been reinstated in office officially as Secretary General” said Dr Idris. “The return to office of the EAJA Secretary General signifies and confirms our commitment to a democratic, independent, militant, regional organisation that is capable of acting in the best interest of its members” added Dr. Idris. “Now we must see the execution of our collective mandate to ensure that we go forward and implement the decisions of the meeting”. The decision of the EAJA Executive Committee was reported to the workshop and backed by a majority decision. The EAJA Executive Committee also agreed to hold its next meeting in the Sudanese capital Khartoum under the auspices of Sudanese Journalists Union.
