EASTERN MONTANA FISHING REPORT FOR THE WEEK OF 8/13/13 COMPILED BY Carol Henckel Remember that Summer brings about some changing conditions so please be aware of wind and sudden changes of weather. Remember to be water safe with life jackets and sunscreen. Dehydration is a big concern so make sure you keep consuming drinking water. Safety is the main concern. Get out and enjoy the fishing. If you are here a lot you can limit out but it is just a harder bite to work. The water is cooling and it has not turned over yet. For walleye chartreuse and orange seem to be working. I caught a 33 incher and we got our limit yesterday. The water is cooling down a little from 66 degrees from 71 degrees.”, bill explains. York island seems to be a good place to get trout right now. Set crank baits at 14 to 16 feet to work. Bass are really a hot bite right now. On the main lake they have been biting like crazy. Bottom bouncers with a leach are working. Walleye bite is more spotty right now. The bite changes daily. They vary from 18 to 25 feet. Gene Moore Lake Ridge Motel 1-406-526-3597 Gene Moore, of Lake Ridge says,” Salmon at the dam are just starting. The catching is real spotty. You have to work for them. A few 20 to 27 pounders have been caught. Lake trout are working with flashers, squids and flutter spoons. They are catching lots of big trout on the lake. Walleye are at 30 to 40 feet. They are finding lake trout at 80 to 110 feet. Use flashers and squids and flutter spoons. Word has it that the Pines are doing well for everything. Northern pike are doing well as is walleye and small mouth. They are using jigs, mepps, spinners and daredevils. ” Lake Elmo Billings Fish are being caught both in a boat and especially off shore. Trout are being caught but the heat is slowing the action some. Cooney Reservoir Jenny/ Maleri/Sam Trolling for walleye is working okay. They are also jigging at 14 feet for walleye. Worms are working pretty well off shore. The dam is picking up some. They are catching rainbow trout with worms and power bait. Deadmans/Martinsdale Justin “Trout fishing at Martinsdale in mornings and evenings is best but really slow fishing right now. Try trout fishing. The water is definitely lower and so fishing has slowed,” Justin explains. “Deadmans is tough water. It is definitely slow. Not a good bite at all. Try higher waters in the mountains for some success. Don’s Lewistown- Dale “Go fishing in the evening on Spring Creek. They are fishing with hoppers. We are seeing a PMD hatch starting. The water has been a bit off color. The upper is better than the lower. Achley is poor fishing. Use bait from shore. From a boat go deeper and use deep trollers and Dick Night lures. On the Missouri at Fred Robinson the winds have been from the east. Catfish are still biting so use traditional catfish bait,“ says Dale. Ponds around here are doing okay try trolling. Use Mepps as they are working. On Crooked Creek by Winnett, the small boats can be launched. They are catching catfish and a few walleye. Crooked Creek-Grant A small boat can be launched as there is some water at Crooked Creek now. The marina will not be open. It is closed but cabins are still available for other uses just call 1-406-429-2999. Minnow Bucket-Allen Camarillo 861-0156 The big action has been the catfish on the Yellowstone river. From Huntley down you can catch them. You can get small mouth as well. Use cut bait for catfish. Sauger are also being caught and seem to be biting more. Average walleye are being caught at Hysham as well. The moss is clearing a little bit. There lots of places that people are catching like Pompey, Waco, and the Big Horn near Custer, Silos Canyon Ferry-Sharon Perch fishing has picked up. Nice fat ones, 13 to 15 inches. For walleyes people are saying go to the South end. Just a bit slower catch. Water temperature has cooled down to 72 or 73 degrees. West Side Sports Dan 1-406-654-1611 Fishing hasn’t changed much. We have gotten a lot of rain, 2 inches last night. Nelson has definitely slowed. Use a bottom bouncer, and night crawlers for walleyes. Go deeper 12 to 20 feet. Cranks are working for Northerns. Because of all the rain make sure you bring your mosquito dope. Forchette The fall classic was tough fishing. Saturday good and Sunday very poor. That is the picture of fishing there right now. Billings-Scheels Fort Peck Glasgow Fishing has changed and surprisingly people are catching lake trout. They are jigging at 100 feet of water and also using a worm harness. Tongue River Bass fishing has gotten better. Head toward structure using a slow trolling motion. Walleye, crappie, pike fishing has been real good as well. I think the best fishing of the year. Cooney Matt says, ” People are catching using smiley blades. Troll cranks with lead core during the day at 2 ½ miles an hour and you will have success for walleye. The Yellowstone Catfish are still hot on the Yellowstone. Use the standard bait. Yellowtail At yellowtail we hear they are catching a few walleye and sauger. Use crank baits at 35 feet. Rich’s Tackle Richard There is a lot of moss on the rivers. The Madison is fishing surprisingly well even though it is low. The Madison river is closed from 2 to midnight. Right now. The upper part of the Jefferson by White Hall andTwin Bridges has been good for rainbows. The West Gallatin is very low and hard fishing. Canyon Ferry I am hearing that people are catching more walleyes in the 14 to 15 range but I also heard one guy caught some nice 17 to 20 inchers. Fishing has picked up this week. Best time to catch 10 to 2 seems to be the time. Petrolia I have had a couple guys tell me that they both caught eater size fish lately. One caught a couple of 2 ½ to 3 pounders. Stillwater Anglers-Chris 406-322-4977 Chris says ”The fishing has picked up because it cooled a bit. Both rivers are working with nymph streamers. No hopper action noticed on either river. Streamers in red and green are catching on both waters. The Yellowstone is working with flies. In fact it has improved. The Stillwater is also doing well on flies. High country rivers are doing well. Both Rosebuds, both lower and upper are catching. Because of the low water and water temp be aware of how you handle the fish you catch. Do as little handling as possible. Fort Smith Trout Shop 666-2375 Steve For dry fly fishing baetes are working. We are starting to see PMD’s and Sally’s moving up the 13 miles toward Big Horn access. PMDS and Sallys are starting to work below as well. We are starting to see the water warm above Big Horn access. Use small black caddis as well at 13 mile access. Nymphing is still good on the Big Horn river. Streamers in black and olive are working real well there.
