EBCs GRAN-EMPANADA-SATURDAY-RIDE: So, how fast would you ride if you knew that succulent, freshly baked EMPANADAS would be at the “Finish Line??” That question, and the “Meaning of Life” were yet to be answered by the 14-16 group on this crisp blue Miami morning. That was the main reason why Gary W and Patricia P lit out of the Science Museum parking lot on Bayshore drive right on the heels of the 16-18 group, ably led by Jose Cruz and Saad Ismal. They hit the trail ahead of the 18-20 riders with Anthony Ingram and Alex Pruna in the lead. All groups had already flown the coup by 7:30 am. But no one saw Ozzie Carriazo and Nelson Moreno do their “Grease Lightning” exit onto the busy Coconut Grove Beehive: IT WAS GRAN FONDO WEEKEND and-- “Ladies and Gentleman”--- it was time to hit Bayshore Drive with purpose: THE GRAN EMPANADA RIDE WAS ON! The 14-16 group had multiple talents on board: Angel P, Jonathan L, David Fernandez and Gary W along with Suzie P. Our new-comers were Beth, the guys from NYC who hollered LIKE TRUE NEUYORKINOS all calls loudly and clearly; and our favorite “voicer”—louder than the NYC guys – Michelle Moreno. Only Dr. P’s whistle topped the decibels on the road, and yes after a while we figured that “all those security alarms going off” as we passed parked cars may have had something to do with our “road calls!” Whowoudathunkit!!! We were Blessed to have a fantabulously happy group of 14-16 cyclist. Then it happened:-- MECHANICAL!!! Jonathan Leon was not wearing his FIU shirt-so you knew something had gone a-rye! But wait a minute?--What other group has the “wherewithal” to do a “Fun Selfie” to commemorate Jonathan’s flat tire – I ask you!!!??? Only the few, the brave, --The EBC “Slowskis”!!! Nope, we are not “slow on the uptake” or “Slow to boil” we are just lackadaisically attached to all things EBC like the GRAN EMPANADA SURPRISE “at the end of the ride.” So we kept the pace at a clean 16.5, and yes we had time to “sprint” into Deering Estate, where we doubled our numbers and re-arranged our lead. Gary became the caboose and Oscar “The Magnificent” and “Mo the Steam Engine” led the sizable group all the way back. The ride back to Coconut Grove “base” was an adventure through “Bed-races,” “Green Barricades” and “Fondo Cyclist” attempting to get their kits and jerseys! But we landed back at the Old Science Museum on Bayshore Drive just in time to meet Martica Cruz our very own EBC GRAN EMPANADA QUEEN!!! Truth be told Janet, Martica and I began this process Friday night with lots of great intentions to “stuff-fold-&-glaze” but the Wine up-ended our good intentions. By majority vote, when 8 pm tolled – Martica took all the goods home and bright and early this morning she baked the “Welcome Back to the Science Museum” Surprise. So yes EBC riders, we had 40 crisp, freshly baked EBC GRAN “Picadillo” EMPANADAS for the hearty, the strong, and the hungry – and the patience-driven personalities—so well illustrated in our EMPANADA EBC GRAN EMPANADA RIDE: So yes EBC riders, we had 40 crisp, freshly baked EBC GRAN “Picadillo” EMPANADAS for the hearty, the strong, and the hungry – and the patience-driven personalities—so well illustrated in our EMPANADA SELFIE---Come ride with us and “Celebrate EBC Friendships” and ride happier another day!!!
