EBOLA AND INDIA Ebola isnt a new virus but this virus has been restricted to Africa for many decades. It usually occurs in poorer countries with weak health systems such as Guinea, Liberia, Nigeria, Senegal and Sierra Leone. This disease has a very high death rate- from 25 - 90 percent! The death toll this year has been over 4500. What about India ? This densely populated nation had been very lucky not to have this deadly virus. India, too, has a weak medical system especially quarantine and surveillance and its preventive medicine measures are just rudimentary. But India has minimal commercial or other relationships with the nations affected by Ebola and, hence, isnt affected by it but would it be so in the future? The only real prevention is development of Africa. With its oil income, Nigeria has practically eradicated Ebola by initiating some critical health care and preventive measures. With increased air travel and goods movement, every nation is at a risk but India with its massive population is more so. This is the time Indians start taking hygiene seriously.
