EBOLA STIGMATIZATION FROM THE DHL OFFICER IN THE UK NIGERIA - TopicsExpress

EBOLA STIGMATIZATION FROM THE DHL OFFICER IN THE UK NIGERIA HIGH COMMISSION 9, NORTHUMBERLAND AVENUE LONDON WC2N 5BX UNITED KINGDOM His Excellency, DR DALAHATU SARKI TAFIDA OFR CFR Dear Sir, My name is Oluwatosin Osaloni, a PhD student, at the Lancashire Law School, in the University of Central Lancashire in Preston. Yesterday, the 28th October, 2014 I was at the DHL office in Hatfield in Hertfordshire County to send a mail to Nigeria however; I was told to go to HOMEBASE STORE in Hatfield, where my letter would be collected from an office inside the store, on behalf of DHL for onward transmission to my country Nigeria. Consequently, on the 29th October, 2014 I was at the HOMEBASE STORE in Hatfield as directed to post my letter to Nigeria. Unfortunately, the lady I met at the store asked me at the first instance if “Nigeria has EBOLA Diseases” and I replied “NO, Nigeria is EBOLA free”. But to my surprise, after my data had been collected in preparation for my letter to be posted, I was again told by the lady that Nigeria has EBOLA, hence she rejected my letter. She said, ‘because DHL has refused to upgrade their system to remove Nigeria from the list of Ebola affected countries, hence, she has to reject my letter. This is so embarrassing, appalling, humiliating, dehumanizing, rejecting and I have been physically affected by this statement directed to me because it has been almost a week now since the World Health Organisation (WHO) certified Nigeria as an EBOLA free country. I was surprised that this kind of stigmatization could come from an organisation that has benefited from Nigeria’s good relationship over the years. I went to the Hatfield Police Station to report this matter and I was told there is nothing they could do about it. It will be well appreciated if the embassy could look into this for appropriate action to be taken to avoid other Nigerians going through this scenario as well because it is highly embarrassing and can cause most people such as myself to be emotionally unbalanced. Kind regards, Oluwatosin Osaloni 207, Kent Street Preston Lancanshire PR1 1PH 07574082627 sooluwatosin@yahoo
