ECONOMISTS SAY THE GOVERNMENT OVERESTIMATED BENEFITS OF WORLD CUP 720 thousand jobs, attracting 600,000 foreign tourists and economic impacts of up to R$ 142 billion. These are some of the benefits mentioned by representatives of the Brazilian government to justify the implementation of the 2014 World Cup in Brazil. The figures contained in studies by renowned consulting firms, Ernst & Young and Value Partners, estimated that in 2010 the effects of the FIFA World on the national economy. Three years later, however, these data are being challenged by economists from major universities. Two studies, one done at Unicamp (University of Campinas) and another at UFMG (Federal University of Minas Gerais), pored over optimistic projections already disclosed and came to a common conclusion: the benefits of the 2014 World Cup were overestimated. The work was done in partnership with the economist Leonardo Oliveira da Silva, who also studied at Unicamp. According to the text, studies [used by the government] introduce assumptions that oversimplify the projections and ignore economic precepts with the intention of to feed high expectations for the positive effects of the Cup.
