ECOS Fall Walks begin September 17 ECOS FALL 2013 NATURE WALKS This series of walks is on Tuesday mornings. Meeting time at the trailhead is about 9:30. Carpool meeting times vary; trips involving a lengthy drive have been set at an earlier carpool meeting time. You may meet us at the trailhead at 9:30 if you’re not interested in carpooling. Many of these walks are in areas that may be wet and muddy. Deer ticks and poison ivy may also be a present. Please use appropriate precautions. See reverse side for driving directions from carpool meeting place. A small donation to carpool drivers is suggested. September 17 Henning Preserve Sample a small part of this large PLAN preserve in Providence, Saratoga County. Due to its high elevation, its Flora is like the central Adirondacks. Be prepared for a hike! Win Bigelow will be our guide. Meet at 8:50 to carpool from the Target near the Glenville Queen on Rt. 50. September 24 Moreau Lake State Park Enjoy fall foliage as we walk around the scenic lake, hike trails through the woods, or climb to a spectacular overlook on Grant Mountain. Jackie Donnelly will guide our walk. Meet at 8:15 to carpool from the Target near the Glenville Queen on Rt. 50. October 1 Woodlawn Preserve Ed Miller will guide our walk through this Preserve which belongs to the City of Schenectady. Come and see why the Friends of the Western Pine Bush are working hard to preserve it. It includes the highest sand dune in the entire Pine Bush. The wetlands here are the headwaters of the Lisha Kill. No carpool meeting—meet at the trailhead at 9:30. October 8 Strawberry Fields Farm Strawberry Fields Farm and Nature Preserve is privately owned and stewarded by Jeff Leon. It comprises 120 acres of open fields, woods, hedgerows, wetlands and ponds. In the fall fringed gentian and eight varieties of both goldenrods and asters bloom. The calciferous bedrock and Mohawk Valley views are also of interest. Nancy Slack will share her expertise. Meet to carpool at 9:00 at the Office Max opposite Rotterdam Square Mall on Campbell Road. October 15 Emma Treadwell Thacher Nature The Nature Center is located in Thompson’s Lake State Park. We’ll meet in the Center, so you may want to view the exhibits and displays. Trails for hiking and skiing lead from the nature center to the lake, through woodlands and fields. Nancy Engel will guide our walk. Meet at the Crosstown Plaza on Rte 7 oppposite Home Depot at 8:30 to carpool. October 22 LishaKill Preserve A visit to Lisha Kill offer a rare example of an old growth forest in a developed area. Some of the trees, namely the Eastern white pine and Eastern hemlock, are estimated to be well over 200 years old. There are flowing streams at this site, which have deep ravines through the underlying bedrock. Three marked trails traverse the preserve, with some steep climbs. The Grattan Family Trail starts between the old fire house and the Grange Hall and makes a loop about 1.5 miles long. There are some steep climbs into and out of stream ravines, and there are frequent wet areas. There is an overlook where the Fly Kill joins the Lisha Kill. Please heed the posted warning and do not get too close! No carpool meeting—meet at the trailhead at 9:30. October 29 Featherstonhaugh Trail Clearing Help us get the trails ready for our winter cross country ski trips. Some tools will be provided, but you may bring your own. ECOS is funded through the support of our members and the community. DIRECTIONS TO FALL 2013 NATURE WALKS These directions are given from the carpool meeting places designated on the other side. Please consult your map if driving from some other location. Please note that the carpool meeting times vary. This is to make it possible to meet at the trailhead at about 9:30, whatever the driving distance. Henning Preserve From Target, turn right to go north on Rte 50 through Burnt Hills, Left on Middleline Road to Rte 29, Left on 29 to East Galway, Right on Antioch Road, Right on Wileytown Road, left on Centerline Road to Parking area and trailheads. Moreau Lake State Park From the Glenville Target parking lot, turn right onto Rte. 50 north to Rte. 67 in Saratoga; turn right to Northway; go north to Exit 17S; go south to Rte. 9; turn right on Old Saratoga Rd; turn right into the park. Woodlawn Preserve From Schenectady, follow Albany St. east from the Crosstown (Rte.7) a little more than a mile to Gifford Rd. Turn right on Gifford and follow it all the way to the end. There is space to park on the left. Strawberry Fields Farm Turn left out of Office Max parking lot; follow Campbell Rd. to intersection with Rt. 890 to go West; at the end of 890 cross the bridge onto Rt. 5; continue west approximately 9 miles to Cranes Hollow Rd. Turn right (white church on the corner) and continue 0.7 miles on Cranes Hollow Rd. Look for sign on right “LEON 240 Private Road.” Turn right and go up the very steep driveway until you come to the parking area on the left near the house. Emma Treadwell Thacher Nature Center From Crosstown Plaza parking lot, turn right on Watt and another right onto Rte 7. Take the ramp onto I- 890 east; follow to Exit 9B toward NY 146. Turn left onto NY 146 (Carman Rd). Rte 146 makes a left at the traffic light onto US 20, and turns right toward Altamont in about a mile. Stay on Rte. 146 all the way into Altamont. (Do NOT follow 146 as it turns right onto Maple!). Continue on Main Street and onto Rte. 156 in Altamont; continue up-hill to left turn onto NY 157 (Thompson’s Lake Rd). Turn left onto Ketchum Rd (Rte 256). After about 3/4 mile, turn right onto Nature Center Way. Parking lot is on right. Lisha Kill Preserve The Lisha Kill Preserve is located on Rosendale Road. Trailhead parking is behind the Grange Hall. This is about ¼ mile west of the intersection of River Road, on the left as you approach from that direction. Approaching from the intersection with Union Street and Rte 7, it’s about 2 miles down Rosendale, on the right. Featherstonhaugh State Forest Meet at 9:00 at Office Max across from Rotterdam Square Mall; turn left onto Campbell (Rte.337); turn left onto Putnam Road; turn right onto Mariaville Rd. at blinking light (Rte. 159); continue west 5.3 miles to Lake Rd.; go left on Lake Rd. about 3 miles to Hardin Rd.; turn right on Hardin and park along side of road.; walk along road to trail access on either side, just below brow of hill.
