EDGAR Lungu’s challenge to his opponents to take medical tests - TopicsExpress

EDGAR Lungu’s challenge to his opponents to take medical tests to prove that they are healthier than him has excited the opposition. MMD president Nevers Mumba, FDD’s Edith Nawakwi and UPND leader Hakainde Hichilema have all agreed to go for medical examinations with Lungu as soon as possible. Reacting to Lungu’s challenge, Mumba said such a move would help the Zambian people make a wise decision when casting their vote on January 20. “That’s wonderful; we need to do that as quickly as possible because that’s what Zambians are looking for. Let’s do it now, let’s do it today and I think that it helps the Zambian people make proper decisions,” Mumba said. He added that medical examinations for those who seek to ascend to the Republican Presidency would be a “wonderful courtesy” to Zambians. “It would be a wonderful courtesy on the part of those of us that are standing to provide that information to the Zambian people, especially having in mind that we have lost two presidents in State House. Zambians would like to have some kind of peace of mind that whosoever they are voting for will be able to hang out a little longer,” Mumba said. He, however, warned Lungu not to “chicken out” of the challenge which he himself has issued. “It will be immoral for him to shy away and I’m sure that since he has encouraged all of us, he is going to take the lead; that’s what leadership is all about. So we all expect that since he is the initiator, he will be the one to lead the way. So I don’t expect him to shy away,” said Mumba. FDD spokesperson Antonio Mwanza said Nawakwi was delighted to hear Lungu’s challenge and had agreed to join him for the medical test. “We welcome that move. The issue of going for medical checkup should not be a small issue and he (Lungu) should not talk about it in a casual or fancy manner. Edgar Lungu should not talk about an important issue in a casual way, with a forked tongue,” he said. Mwanza further said Lungu must also be challenged to sign the social contract on delivering a constitution that would compel presidential aspirants to undergo medical checkups. The UPND leader laughed at Lungu’s challenge and described it as a trick to divert people’s attention from the violent attacks by his cadres on the electorate, adding that he was ready to join Lungu for the medical challenge.
