EDHA pass Death Penalty on Kidnappers in Edo State Edo State House of Assembly today passed a law for a death penalty on anyone who indulges in the act of kidnapping. This follows the consideration of a Bill for a law to amend the law prohibiting the act of kidnapping and the committing of any act as an explicit or implicit condition for the release of a person kidnapped in Edo State. Amending some sections of the existing law which are section 3, 4, to 5, 7, to 10 and section 12, 14, and 15 to substitute the earlier life imprisonment with certain option of fine to death penalty. However the conclusion by the house for a death penalty for kidnappers did not easily sail through as the issue generated a heated debate. Some of the members who include Jude Ise-Idehen and Barrister Friday Ogieriahki attempted to kick against the full implementation of the death sentence in kidnapping. The arguments could not however persuade other members including Johnson Aguna, Victor Edobor and Elizabeth Ativie who insisted that the death penalty must be retained. The law sailed through after the relevant sections were awarded which also include stiffer penalty for those aiding kidnappers while the properties used in the process would be demolished. The speaker Uyi Igbe directed that copies should be sent to the governor for his accent. Also the house rounded up plenaries for the first quarters, third session of the fifth assembly.
