EDITORIAL/Obamas Gettysburg Address | We had planned to run The Gettysburg Address printed above before President Obama on Tuesday read his own version, a version that, technically speaking, is historically accurate as a draft of the address, but it isnt what Lincoln said 150 years ago. Unfortunately, it wasnt noted the Presidents appearance was a dramatization. The controversy surrounds the words under God that Obama omitted. Obama read the Nicolay Version, often called the first draft because it is believed to be the earliest of the copies that exist of the Gettysburg Address. The Nicolay Version the President was asked to read does not contain under God in the final sentence, although thats what Lincoln said, according to numerous newspaper accounts at the time, including The Associated Press. Slipping from tradition, Mr. Obama has a propensity to omit God from official communications with the American people and thats his perogative. Thankfully, theres no religious litmus test to be President of the United States or theyd be turning Christians out of Washington left and right under a new state religion. Most disgusting are the liberals who defend the Revisionist and Chief for accurately reading a document of historical value and then proceed to question the intellectual integrity of any challengers. Since when has anybody ever suggested passing off the prepared remarks of Martin Luther Kings I Have a Dream speech as the truth? He ad-libbed the best parts. Maybe with Mr. Obamas Gettysburg, it depends upon what the meaning of the word is is.
