EDM 101 : Names & Meanings Original Mix - Is the mix from the original artist. Vocal Mix - is the mix from the original artist with vocals. Remix - You are asked by the label or artist to do a remix. Your unofficial bootleg is not what we call a remix. Bootleg - You made your own unique version of a song without the artists or labels approval. This is not a remix (yet). It does happen sometimes that bootlegs get an official release. Before that dont call it a remix. And dont promote it as such. Mash-up - You threw 2 or more songs in the same tune & blend them together. A smashup however is song that segues to another track with the same tune or note. Edit - You did some edits of an existing song to your liking. Copy & paste some parts, add a loop, make the break longer, fatten up the bass, warp the synths, and so on. Fun way to spice up your DJ-sets. Re-Drum - You put new drums (kick, clap, etc.) on an existing song. Promo - A song thats being promoted (hence the name promo) before it gets an official release. A demo is not a promo. Demo - A song that hasnt seen an official release yet, and you might send to a label for consideration. DJ Set or Mix Set - A set of tracks mixed live or pre-recorded by a DJ. D.J. DJ or Deejay - is a person who mixes recorded music for an audience. EDM Producer - is a person who produces & records Electronic Dance Music in a medium for DJs to play.
