EDO STATE STORM WATER PROJECT The Edo State Government has taken the bold initiative towards tackling the menace of Flooding and Erosion with the award of a contract for the first phase of the implementation of the Benin-City Storm water Master plan. This contract which is about 65% completed was awarded at the sum of 30.4Billion Naira. A. UWELU EAST AND UWELU WEST CATCHMENT AREAS This phase covers the Uwelu East and Uwelu West catchment areas which accounts for about 30% of the current flooding problem of Benin City This landmark decision is in line with the policy of Government on a holistic approach to Infrastructural development, the de-flooding of these areas will involve the construction of a major canal of 7.542 Kilometers and other tributary canals of 7.76Kilometers. The Construction of 9 Roads accompanied with side drains which would discharge into the primary and tributary canals. The Road which would include provision of walkways, Streetlights and Greens are; • Construction of Upper Siluko Road (dual carriage) from Textile Mill junction – 5000metres • Construction of Igbinaduwa Street -2,675metres • Construction of Akugbe Road -740metres • Construction of Aigbekan Road -450 metres • Construction of Uwelu Road -2,472metres • Construction of Obakpolo Street -570metres • Construction of Iyobagosa Road -380metres • Construction of Asigie Road -695metres • Construction of Otote Road -2,856metres • Construction of chute channel of 600meters to eventually empty in Ogba river • Reclamation of Ekehuan road Gully Erosion It is anticipated that when this project is commissioned the problem of flooding in the areas concerned would have been resolved for good. The contract is estimated to be completed within 4-6 years depending on availability of funding and favorable weather. OTHER PERMANENT FLOOD & EROSION CONTROL INTERVENTION WORKS; B. OKHORO EAST AND OKHORO WEST CATCHMENT AREAS – Construction of drainage structures for Costain, Isonorho Street and Environs, including 3rd, 4th and 5th Guobadia Lanes and Oni Lane totaling 1.948km of road and 3.9km of drainage. Project also includes full tar of roads surface soft and hard landscaping, street lighting and beautification. This contract which was awarded at the sum of 442.9Million naira has since been completed. Design and construction of drainage structures and asphalting of associated roads (This project involves the drainage, full tar surfacing, landscaping, street lighting and beautification of 13 Roads, comprising, Midwest Street, Iheya Street, 1st, 2nd and 3rd Iheya Lanes, Ivbiye Street, Ivbiye lane, Uwa Street, 3rd cemetery, Oro Street, and part of West East Circular, Wire and Urubi Roads making a total of 5.170km of road and 10.340km of drainage. Chute channel and stone pitching on the five junction moat from 2nd west road up to New Lagos road where it discharges into The Eghosa grammer school underground receptacle. The scope of this project also includes covered drains, walkways and street lights. The contract which was awarded at a contract sum of 3.34Billion naira is 90% completed. The scope of this project also includes covered drains, walkways and street lights. – Upper Lawani Road.- Design and construction of drainage structures and asphalting of associated roads (This project involves the construction of a major canal of 2.35KM comprising of new canal of 0.65 Kilometers and rehabilitating of old canal of 1.7km terminating at Ikpoba river. Others includes the construction of culverts, road drainage structures, full tar surfacing, landscaping, street lighting and beautification of four (4) Roads, namely Upper lawani road, Anthony Iyamu Street, Omogiate Street and Salami Street making a total of 4.518km of road and 9.06km of drainage and walkways. This contract which is about 85% completed was awarded at the sum of 4.62Billion Naira. The contract is estimated to be completed within 2-3 years depending on availability of funding and favorable weather. C. CENTRAL BUSINESS DISTRICT CATCHMENT AREA – Design and construction of drainage structures and dualization of Siluko Rd from Oba market road junction to Textile Mill Rd junction. This project involves the drainage, full tar surfacing, landscaping, street lighting and beautification totaling 3.0km and about 6.1km drainage. This project has been completed with covered drains, walkways and street lights and extensive landscaping work. This contract which was awarded at the sum of 2.55Billion Naira has since been completed. D. GAPIONA AVENUE CATCHMENT AREA This involves the total re-design of airport Road and construction of Storm water control structures - Design and construction of drainage structures and asphalting of associated roads. This project involves the construction of culverts, road, drainage structures, tar surfacing, of Airport road (7.1km) and a total of 3.2km involving (27Nos) of associated roads. Other component of the project includes; * 7.1km dual arm street light. * Primary underground drain of 1.8m diameter and 1.8km in length * Secondary underground drain of 1.2m by 1.2m rectangle of about 83 meters long * 6km of drains on associated roads * 14.2km of secondary drains on Airport road * 7.1km of six lanes dual carriage asphaltic road on airport road. * 20km of walkways * 15km of service ducts The project also includes extensive landscaping, solar powered traffic lights, street lighting and beautification of the whole road. This contract which was awarded at the sum of 3.99Billion Naira has since been completed.
