EDUCATION IS THE KEY, BUT WHO CARES FOR OUR STUDENTS? The whole - TopicsExpress

EDUCATION IS THE KEY, BUT WHO CARES FOR OUR STUDENTS? The whole purpose of education is to turn mirrors into windows through which we can see a better future. In our society today, life without a degree seems useless and none can credit one without the latter. In fact, degree is becoming a common unit among Kenyans, and life without masters or PHD seems meaningless to job seekers. But wait, who cares for our students who in return are the driving force for our economy? Let me quess, the government or various institutions administration? Wrong answer. The uncouth and Orthodox kind of lifestyle that our students live is shouting loud in the lone forest but end up on dear ears. The government has turn her back on us. Get an admission permit to learn but your accommodation and welfare is upon you. That is the new order of the day. HELB loan is to be reduced mercilessly by 50% and one could predict what next on our fees. Universities and colleges are in massive competition to out do each other through lucrative buildings, number of courses offered but none thinks of education value and students welfare. In our dailies, all you will see is opening of new structures in various universities and a list of universities offering non-credited faculties. In my leadership conquest, I met this lady, let me call her Damaris a 3rd yr Bachelor of Commerce student at Kenyatta University narrating her ordeal. She hails from a humble background and through sleepless nights in high school, the search for the precious honey hidden in papers landed her in Nairobi. The capital city of Kenya,Buore Kapango, the city of the selected few, and the Mighty Gor Mahia or Kogallo fans will term it Nairobi Onge Min Ngato (In Nairobi, there is no ones mother) Dama missed accommodation in 1st year and that meant staying outside school. Painfully, the loan her mum had taken in their chama had been exhausted. There was no otherwise, she only knew one person in Nairobi. A male working friend whom she knew through her elder sister in Moi University. Mr. X decided to grand his outrageous hands but little did she know that, this will come at a price. Damaris lost herself to a married man who pretended to be a good Samaritan but in reality, was one opportunistic and an adventure into the untilled land of an innocent education hungry lady. Her story is one in a million nightmares that comrades face in various universities ranging from male to female students. And my question remains, who CARES for our student? Employers need good grades, but do they know how those grades are achieved? Unemployed is the greatest ordeal after 12yrs or so of classwork and hardships. Leadership is all about helping the less fortunate in the society but not the tender care and concern of those in the 1st class and bigwigs of our economy. Rules are made to protect the lawmakers and on the other hand to absurdly oppress the lower class. Our government, student leaders and our administrations should adopt the US system of taxing the rich to uplift the needy in our society. Our students are the future generation and they deserve a second thought. Kind Regards.
