** EDUCATION TIME ** Im sure most of us have seen or heard about the heavy snowfalls in north east US through Buffalo in update NY in recent days and the media have mentioned many times it was enhanced by a lake effect but what is lake effect snow?? This is an effect which applies to areas around large lakes like those seen in the northern US. When cold unstable air/winds moves across the relatively warm waters of the lake (usually Autumn or early Winter), air rises due to convection which creates clouds and heavy showers. In cold conditions, the moisture in the clouds will fall as heavy snow. So the warmer the water the better the precipitation will be hence heavier snow falls. We hope this helps :)
