EEE PG Programmes in CEG Anna University The Department offers 1 UG, 6 PG and Research programmes in the field of Electrical Engineering. About 65 students in the UG and 30 students in each of the PG specializations are admitted every year through single window counselling system. The Department offers UG course in EEE (Full time / Part time). The PG courses offered in different specializations are: control and Instrumentation Embedded System Technologies High Voltage Engineering Power Electronics and Drives Power Systems Engineering Power Engineering and Management Control and Instrumentation The Division of Control & Instrumentation engg. was started in the year 1988 as a regular AICTE approved programme to offer Post-Graduation in Control & Instrumentation. This course is offered as Full-time programme, to encourage fresh Non-Gate & 5 Gate candidates and industry sponsored practicing engineers. The curriculum is designed to cater to the state of art technology that could support the industrial requirement for design of controller for electrical power apparatus and systems. The faculties are involved in providing expert consultancies to small scale industries around Tamil Nadu on design validation of instrument transformers, power switches etc. Vision Setting Research facilities with lab infrastructure and Manpower Development to create exposure and proficiency in design of controllers for power industries on electrical apparatus and rotating machines. The division has a vision of setting a state of art lab for Non-Destructive testing of electrical machines using advanced transducers and signal analysis techniques to serve the small scale industries around Tamil Nadu. The curriculum was designed by expert research group, industrialists and academicians, to meet the today’s demands of the Industry as well as Research Groups. The syllabus is focusing on various areas like Adaptive and robust control, Stability analysis, study of non linear dynamics, advanced courses on Instrumentation, industrial field bus etc. The Control & Instrumentation Division has invested over Rs.2.0 crores to develop a fully equipped laboratory to meet the requirement of Research & Development in this area. The lab is equipped with Target board supported software packages like LABVIEW 8 with NI-ELVIS, WANDERWARE and licensed version of MATLAB 7.0.1, MATHCAD, DSPACE & MAPPLE. Sophisticated test and measuring equipments as high speed DAQ systems, DSO’s programmable ac and dc sources, PLC, current probe, multi channel data logger, arbitrary function generator, DSP processor kits etc. The statistical observation on the department placement profile is 80% of placement in core and IT industries and the rest 20% as teaching faculties and research peer. The companies and organizations include ISRO, DRDO, CVRDE, Accenture, Wipro, Tata Elaxi, L&T, Honeywell, HP HCL, TCS, IBM, CTS etc. The students have undergone industrial visits to NLC, NTPC, ISRO, CSIR, FORD etc., to gain industrial knowledge. The department is engaged with research activities in various domains of Control & Instrumentation. The division now has 8 Research Scholars working in Full-Time and Part-Time. The research areas include robust control, Network Control System, Signal Processing, Process Control System, Implementation of control Architecture, Fuzzy and Neuro controllers, Virtual Instrumentation etc. The department is currently engaged in pursuing the design, development of power modules for Anna University Micro satellite (ANUSAT). The testing of the flight model is in progress under the leadership of Prof.B.Umamaheswari. The NaMPET project is a government funded project that has the team involved in design, analysis, development of system interfaces for rotating electrical machines and control. Top of Page Embedded System Technologies The College of Engineering, Anna University pioneered into Instituting the Division of Embedded System Technologies (EST ) as the First of its kind in Asia & specifically in India it was started in the year 2002 . The DEEE offers currently Post-Graduate course in M.E – Embedded System Technology as a self supporting programme. This course is being offered both as a Full-Time and as well as a Part-Time programmes, to encourage fresh and practicing engineers to enhance their professional skill in this field. Faculty members with Doctoral Degrees & faculty pursuing research are the Team of Teaching Community with experience in various specializations of EEE, ECE,C.Sc, I.T . The curriculum is been continually designed through up gradations by academic experts of the University, researchers, industrialists and academicians from other renowned Institutes like IIT’s, to meet the today’s demands of the Industry as well as Research Groups. The syllabus is focusing on various areas like Role of Embedded Systems in development of Consumer and Industrial graded products using computation techniques , Communication and Embedded Networking, etc., The Embedded System Division has invested over Rs.100 Lakhs to develop a fully equipped laboratory to meet the requirement of Teaching, Learning, and Research & Development in the domain. The lab is well equipped with range of Target processors with board supported software packages, embedded processor development modules with multiple user license and manuals. The available software packages includes Xilinx, RTOS packages, Mems Suite as Comsol, Intellisuite, SIMON, Mat lab Tools, NI- Lab view Tools, VLSI CAD Tools, Network communication Tools, embedded C Compiler, etc., Also facilities are available to practice & realize hardware based projects with the resources in-house. At present 11 batches of full-time students and part-time students have graduated and have been secured nearly @ 100% placement in reputed companies and R& D organizations. The companies and organizations includes Wipro, Visteon,Tata Elaxi, L&T, Honeywell, HP, HCL, TCS, IBM, CTS, ISRO,CDAC, etc., The students have undergone industrial visits to Wipro, Visteon, ISRO etc., to gain industrial knowledge & exposure. The department is engaged with research activities in various domains of embedded systems. The division has now completed & produced 14 Ph.D research scholars, and has currently 15 Full-Time Research Scholars and 5 Part-Time Research Scholars. The research areas include Grid Computing, Smart Grid Technologies, Wireless Sensor Network, Energy Consumption in Low - power Electronics, Pattern recognition and also in interdisciplinary areas wherever embedded system is needed. The Embedded System Division has been upgraded to the status of CAS: ” Centre Of Excellence For Power EngineeringWith Embedded Systems”by UGC since 2009 FIST sponsored “Power Engineering For Smart Grid With Embedded Systems “ by DST since 2012 Instituted the NuMicro ARM Cortex MO processor supported Lab with the technical & resource support of Nuvoton Technologies, Taiwan since 2014. Enterpreners Development in EST is the special trend of many graduating Scholars who are successfully venturing with the confidence they gathered through the education in this specialisation. Top of Page High Voltage Engineering The Division of High Voltage Engineering in the Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering was established in the year 1960 in the College of Engineering, Guindy (CEG). Post Graduate course in High Voltage Engineering is offered since 1964 with an objective to produce high voltage engineers to cater to the needs of the industries in design, manufacturing and testing of power apparatus. The course has been awarded “A” grade by National Board of Accreditation. The students are well trained in the High Voltage Laboratory and in the Electromagnetic field computation laboratory to gain hands on experience in the field of specialization. The facilities in the Division are effectively used by both undergraduate (Electrical and Electronics Engineering) and post graduate students as part of their curricula. Many of the post graduate students carryout their project works in the industries and R&D centers in India and are mostly absorbed for placement by them. The Division has an active interaction with other departments in the University and industries through consultancies and testing. High Voltage Laboratory has been involved in high voltage dielectric tests such as Impulse voltage withstand test, Power frequency voltage withstand test, Partial discharge measurement test etc. as per Indian and International standards and the facilities are effectively utilized by the industries for quality assurance. The High Voltage Laboratory in the Division started with a 1540kV, 19kJ impulse generator and 450kVA Cascaded transformer and now has been enhanced with the following facilities/equipment: A 400kV HVDC/Impulse generator and has been modified to generate impulse voltages from lightning impulse to very fast transients, oscillatory voltages and non-standard impulses as per CIGRE W.G. C4.302 ,Partial discharge measurement system, Capacitance and tanδ measurement kit, Energy analyzer, Sweep frequency response analyzer (0.1Hz – 25MHz), Vacuum and high pressure vessel, Digital storage oscilloscopes upto 1GHz, 5S/s, High precision impedance analyser (50MHz). FIST-DST has sanctioned for Electromagnetic field analyzer and Electrode based Cell Impedance Sensing System for Real Time monitoring of Cell Behavior and Morphology. The laboratory has facilities to compute electromagnetic fields using Finite Element Method and Electromagnetic Transient Program (EMTP) in addition to circuit simulation packages. The Division is actively involved in research activities in the diversified areas of power engineering in the following areas: • High frequency modeling of power apparatus and estimation of transient overvoltages • Characterization of insulating materials under non- standard impulses and repeated impulses • Insulation design of high voltage polymeric insulators • Fault detection in transformer winding • High voltage applications in food preservation, agriculture, textile industries and in cancer treatment • Characterization of nano dielectric materials So far 20 scholars have completed their doctorate degree and 10 research scholars are pursuing their research at present in the Division of High Voltage Engineering. The High Voltage Laboratory has received funds for research activities from government funding agencies like, University Grants Commission (UGC) – Centre for Advanced Studies (CAS), Ministry of Human Resource Development All India Council for Technical Education, Technical Education Quality Improvement Programme (TEQIP), Department of Science and Technology under Promotion of University Research and Scientific Excellence (DST-PURSE) and FIST Programme. The High Voltage Laboratory in College of Engineering, Guindy, has a blend of academics, research and industry collaboration complementing each other. With our Under Graduate and Post Graduate students and Research Scholars, we are able to venture into the diversified areas of high voltage engineering and keep strengthening our expertise. Top of Page Power Electronics and Drives The Division of Power Electronics a Drives was started in the year 1988 as a regular programme, currently offers Post-Graduate course in M.E – Power Electronics and Drives. The course is being offered as both Full-Time as well as Part-Time programme, to encourage fresh and practicing engineers to enhance their professional skill in this field. Setting Research facilities with lab infrastructure and Manpower Development to create exposure and proficiency in Embedded system Applications for Power converters and drives. The curriculum was designed by researchers, experts, industrialists and academicians, to meet the today’s demands of the Industry as well as Research Groups. The syllabus is focusing on various areas like Electric Machines fundamentals, Modern power Electronics, Special Electrical machines, Power quality analysis, Development of digital controllers for drives, CAD of Power Electronics systems and applications and renewable energy. The PED has invested over Rs.70 Lakhs to develop a fully equipped laboratory to meet the requirement of Research & Development in this area. The lab is equipped with Target board supported software packages, embedded processor development modules with multiple user license and manuals. The available software packages includes MAGNET, ANSYS, MATLAB, PSPICE, PSIM. Major equipment like Switched Reluctance motor, AC-DC drive system, PMBLDC drive, FPGAs, DSPACE, matrix converters, DFIG etc are available. At present more than 80% students graduated are placed in reputed companies and R& D organizations. The companies and organizations includes CTS, TCS, Infosys, Airports Authority, HCL, Larsen and Toubro and GE etc., The students have undergone industrial visits to Numeric Power supplies, Tamil Nadu Electricity Board IGCAR, Thermal power station, FORD to gain knowledge. The division is engaged with research activities in the areas like AC drive systems, Resonant power systems, Modeling and Analysis of electrical machines, Wind energy power conversion, Power quality studies , Renewable energy etc. The division now has 8 Research Scholars under part-time category and 1 M.S student on Full-Time basis. 10 Ph.D and 4 M.S students have graduated since 1988. The division was funded by AICTE for Rs.8.0 lakhs for the Design and development of Universal power quality conditioner.Around 50 papers have been published in International and National journals and conferences, Top of Page Power Systems Engineering The PG Programme in Power System Engineering in the Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering was started in the year 1963 with an intake of 10 students. This division has been manned right from its inception by a strong faculty well qualified in various facets of power system engineering. Significant work has been done in the area of power system engineering through research work and industry institute interaction. Currently the research work is going on in the areas of Power System Stability, Operation and control, FACTS controllers, power quality, De-regulation, Grid connected Wind Energy Conversion Systems and Application of Artificial Intelligence Techniques to Power System Problems. The Division has three laboratories. The Simulation Laboratory with the UNIX opearing system is meant for the Under Graduate students. The Advanced Simulation Laboratory is equipped with the application software packages such as EUROSTAG, ETAP, PSCAD/EMTDC and Electromagnetic transient programme to educate and provide advanced training in the analysis, design and operation of Modern Interconnected Power Systems at post graduate level. The Project Laboratory is meant for doing research and consultancy works. The available facilities are effectively used by the Research Scholars. So far 17 Ph.Ds have been produced and 20 are ongoing. All the research works are reported in International Conferences and Journals. The candidates pursue research with financial assistantship under QIP, UGC and Dr.Kannoth Sukumarn Fellowhips. Over the past two decades, research and consultancy activities have been carried out by the faculty of the division. As a part of theses activities a number of software packages were developed for power system studies. These software packages were supplied to TNEB for their use in operational and planning studies. These software packages are also being used by undergraduate and postgraduate students and research scholars for training in regular course work as well as for research works.
