EG Parents: please read the following, and forward to others! Thanks... *********************************************** Dear Parents, We invite you to join us for a meeting to discuss East Greenwich schools – specifically, possible areas of improvement (from elementary to high school). All are welcome; there was a preliminary meeting this past Monday, but we hope to broaden our group to include greater representation from all of the schools, K-12. Whether you attended Monday or are just hearing about this now: please come! And please help us spread the word by forwarding this email to any interested parties. Additionally, several parents attended the school committee meeting on Tuesday night, and during the public comment section addressed such issues as above grade level education (gifted/enrichment), the importance of parent/community engagement in the strategic planning process, and a request for the school committee to look carefully at the school start times (pushing back the middle/high school start times, etc). Other topics that came up during the Monday meeting include: *Transition to PARCC from NECAP *Math weakness as evidenced by lower high school NECAP scores and anecdotal reports from parents *Opportunities for increased classroom rigor *The need for professional development opportunities (and time for them!) for the teachers *The lack of a full time, permanent curriculum director or asst superintendent *Improved facilities and smaller class sizes *Frustration with the bus schedule/company *Improvements in the high school guidance office, both with college counseling, technology, and the need to increase the number of graduates going to four year colleges And- * What can we as parents do to help deliver a world class education to our children? The school committee has seven members, four of whom are up for re-election this November (one has already indicated she will not run again). We aim to identify talented, committed candidates to run for these seats, and will be organizing a grassroots effort to support their campaigns. The meeting will be held at 7:30 pm on Tuesday, March 25th at 6 Brayton Meadow, home of Christian Roos. Brayton Meadow is essentially across from the intersection of Shippeetown and Middle, and is a private drive marked by two small stone pillars. #6 is the second driveway on the right; you may see a sign for #8 as you drive in, but proceed past that to the right and up towards the house. We are excited that so many parents are engaged in efforts to improve our schools, and hope that you will join us – we’re very eager for your ideas and input. And again: please share this invitation far and wide. Thank you!
