EIGHTH RESEARCH SCHOLARS’ WORKSHOP Salesian College, Siliguri Campus, 12 August 2013: The college organised the eighth one day Research Scholars’ Workshop today in the conference hall of the Siliguri campus. The programme was headed by Professor Arun Jana, HoD, Dept. of Political Science who was also the guest of honour for the day along with Fr. (Dr.) George Thadathil, Principal, Salesian College. Scholars who participated in the workshop came from different streams of social sciences. It started with the lighting of the lamp in front of Don Bosco’s portrait followed by the welcome note given by the co- ordinator, principal and the keynote address by the guest of honour. The programme started with Ms. Rimni Chakravarty’s (Asst. Professor, SIT) presentation entitled “Let us be caring- living environs: some socio-moral issues concerning Siliguri”. Her presentation was basically a study of achievements relating to the socio economic aspects and improper waste disposal in Siliguri town. The second participant for the day was Dr. Prabir Kumar Panda, Asst. Professor, SIT who presented a paper on the emergence of food and its wastage and the title of his study was, “Save food, Save environment”. He highlighted on the issues of waste food disposal and limited resources. His focus was to throw light on the food exploitation and the inequality in the distribution which ultimately results in malnutrition. He challenged by putting forth the issue that how food worth Rs.50, 000 crore is getting wasted every year in India. The programme continued with the third participant Mr. Indrajit Chatterjee , Co-ordinator of MBA Programme, Salesian College, Siliguri and his area of concern was the procedure for collecting data and literature review for research. The next participant Mr Uday Kumar Shaw, Dept of History,Salesian College, Sonada, spoke about the “Challenges of contemporary history”. Followed by Fr. Babu Joseph who brought out the Emergence of Darjeeling as a tourist destination of West Bengal, highlighting the issues of Darjeeling being the favourite spot for foreigners and the localites who can engage themselves in different prospects for encouraging their business. Mr. Joyesh Rajguru, was the next participant and the title of his talk was, “The journey of pinakothek from a place of contemplation to a social institution”. Durga Kumari Sahu, Asst. Professor, Salesian College, Sonada was the next to present her work and her title was “Transformation of tribal women in Darjeeling hills”. She presented the project proposal. Sandeep Sundas, M.phil Scholar and Asst. Prof. Salesian College, Siliguri also presented his paper. He discussed about the Socio-economic condition of tea garden workers in Darjeeling hills - A case study of Kurseong (a sub-division of Darjeeling district). Ms Moushakhi Ray, research scholar and Asst. Prof. Salesian College, Siliguri was the next to present her paper. She encountered a problem in the duopoly framework with special emphasis to her topic, “Revisiting trade theory- in a microeconomic framework”. The final presenter Dr. Kabita Sarkar, Dept of Mathematics, Salesian College, Siliguri spoke about her work on, “Analytical and simulation study of atmospheric neutrino content”. Ms. Moushakhi Ray winded up the programme with the vote of thanks and certificates were distributed to the participants by the guest of honour Professor Arun Jana.Fr. Principal congratulated the participants and expressed his gratitude to Professor Jana for sparing his time from his busy schedule to make his presence. The eighth research scholars’ workshop came to an end with a photo session.
