EKITI: Lai Mohammed Under Fire! The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) in Ekiti State has taken a swipe at the National Publicity Secretary of All Progressives Congress (APC), Alhaji Lai Mohammed, over the closure of courts in Ekiti State and deployment of security personnel in the premises following the invasion of the complex recently. The NLC, which was reacting to a statement credit to Mohammed, in which he claimed that the Presidency deployed soldiers in the court handling the case of the governor-elect, Ayo Fayose, to stop judgement before his swearing-in next Thursday, said the claim was “not only a falsehood, but also unfortunate.” In a statement made available to newsmen in Ado Ekiti, Ekiti State capital on Friday, the NLC said workers in Ekiti State, including those in the state chapter of Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria (JUSUN), had been on strike days before the deployment of the security personnel, pointing out that the workers had gone on strike over two months salaries and sundry arrears owed them by the state government. In the statement signed by the secretary of NLC in Ekiti State, Comrade Ade Obatoye, the workers said the Chief Judge of Ekiti State, who announced the closure of the courts, had not announced their reopening and therefore, warned politicians against reading political meanings to the issue and stop creating the impression that the strike and the refusal of the workers to resume to work was political. “We want to state categorically that all workers in Ekiti State, which include the members of the Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria (JUSUN), could not have resumed when the demand for payment of two months salaries and other arrears and deductions has not been met by the government. Meanwhile, a socio-political group, under the aegis of The Coalition of Democracy Vanguard, Ekiti State, has said the attempt made by some people to disqualify the governor-elect, Mr Ayodele Fayose, after winning the June 21 governorship election was “a coup against democracy and the people of the state.” SATURDAY TRIBUNE
