EL PASO HISTORIC BUILDING COULD BE RESTORED, SAYS REPORT Although the Texas Department of Transportation says it wants to demolish El Paso’s Lincoln Center, a historical preservation expert says the cost of bringing the building back to life would not be as great as earlier supposed. The two-story center, at 4001 Durazno Street in southcentral El Paso, has been owned by the Texas DOT for more than four decades. But not until last year did that ownership become a matter of controversy when the DOT said it wanted to tear the structure down to make way for the $50 million construction of two new highway ramps. After community and city leaders complained about the plans to do away with the center, which nearly a century ago served as a school for Hispanic and African-American children in the area, the DOT agreed to forestall the demolition. Now a report submitted by the El Paso County Historical Commission notes that the building could be remediated for an adaptive re-use at “a reasonable cost.” The Texas DOT is expected to make a final decision in the matter soon.
