ELDERS WARNED OVER INTIMIDATION By Uwes Galgalo Leaders of the Wardei clan of Tana River County have vowed to continue agitating for the equitable sharing of leadership and development positions amongst the 500,000 strong community members. Led by their chairman Adhan Muhumed and Secretary Jelle Farah, the leaders who included influential businessmen, scholars and clerics told off the council of elders for allegedly putting their individual interests before those of the community. In a meeting that brought together the feuding Wardei community leaders, the council of elders was accused of intimidating people by taking away the wives of those who differed with their opinions. The leaders criticized the council of elders for poor leadership which saw the community miss out on county government positions. They accused former Bura Member of Parliament Dr. Nuh Nassir and the chairman of the Wardei Council of elders Abdi Hassan of using the CDF to fuel sub- clan divisions claiming that those perceived to be dissenters were sidelined. Stressing that all they wanted to see was fairness and transparency, the leaders called for elections to be carried out to elect a new council of elders pointing out that the two- year- term of the current members had elapsed since they were elected in 2006. The leaders also called on community members put to an end retrogressive cultural practices like FGM and wife inheritance noting that they were hindering the community from making progress. At the same time, they appealed to Tana River County governor Amb. Hussein Dhadho to oversee the creation of a new Wardei community administration unit, saying they had no confidence in the current office holders.
