ELEVATING PRINCIPLES ABOVE PLEASURE TEXT: “But Daniel purposed in his heart that he would not defile himself with the portion of the king’s meat, nor with the wine, which he drank” Daniel 1:8 What you don’t handle now will handle you later. What you pamper today will pepper you tomorrow. What you don’t challenge now will challenge you. Character is an aspect of our life that you must handle. Character is a choice. Daniel’s decision not to defile himself was a deliberate and volitional choice. Compromise is a choice. It is a choice to tell the truth or tell a lie. A life of integrity is a choice. A young girl once admitted that she has been sleeping with men in order to be able to cater for her younger ones. Her Pastor looked at her in the face and told her to rather starve herself and her younger ones instead of ruining her life and destiny. She heed that advice though it was tough but today she is a wife of a prominent servant of God. Choice determined her destiny. You must learn to elevate principles above pleasures. Character is the elevation of conviction above convenience and comfort. Further more, character is the elevation of conscience above consequence. Character is the decision to please God rather than your self or man. Character makes your reverence for God to be preferable to respect for man. Your actions in little issues determine your actions in greater matters. Because the Hebrew boys said ‘no’ to the king’s food, it was easy for them to say ‘no’ to the king’s image and his gods. Those who decide to do right by the 11th hour, never made it to the 12th hour. Do it now, for tomorrow is not guaranteed.
